| Active since: | 4 April 2009 | | | Other interests: | Music, basketball, guitar, reiki, sleep, making big hands | | | Profession: | Poker Player | | | Website: | http://grindintrent.blogspot.com | | | Personal: | My life's work was/is as a guitarist/singer/songwriter. You can stop by http://myspace.com or caslucas.com for more info on that. I'm 31, single, in the paycheck to paycheck lifestyle... and I'm so grateful to have found my way to poker.
I make most of my living in live NL/Spread-Limit games, as well as Stud and O8 (all the games we get in NoCal), but I play all the games. Online, my favorites are Stud high/low (S8), PLO, and MIXED GAMES. I play a lot of HORSE and S8 tournaments and sit and go's, but cash games are my bread and butter. I used to play online NLHE quite a bit, but now I get most of my equity out of the "8-Game" mix on Poker Stars. (2-7 draw, H.O.R.S.E, No-Limit Hold 'Em, PLO).
I'm 31, but I look younger. This presents table image issues for me, having to pass "the donkey test" w/ every new, older opponoent. In a poker world full of macho egotists, I find myself w/ a lot of edge, as I check my pride @ the door. I love the COMFORT of a limit poker form, and I play a lot of $4/8 Stud these days. I'm @ the Oaks in Emeryville/Oakland CA 5-7 days a week, and I've made the vast majority of my bankroll in live NLHE games. I play tight-aggressive, changing gears/addapting as needed. I don't move all-in, every time I think there is a FAIR likleyhood that my opponent(s) will fold. If I'm bluffing, it's a position steal, or it has a big fat SEMI out in front of the word bluff. Dry bluffs are over-rated, and I make my living reading loose-aggressive players. I need to work on my bet sizing, REM, and advanced poker math (beyond being able to calculate pot odds, implied odds, and put my villian on a range). The best part of my game, so far, is my reading ability and the fact that I DON'T get macho or buy into any table talk. I don't play back @ people, just b/c they showed me a big bluff. It's just about $$ for me, $$ and working @ a craft, until I'm dominant @ my current playing levels.
As a young player, I'm bummed how few of us play "the other games." Don't get me wrong, I'm glad ppl might sit down @ my NLHE table here in town (or in Reno or Vegas etc) might be "straight from TV" players. The soft $$ is in NL, but that doesn't mean it'll always be that way. Frankly, I think Stud-8 is my best game. I only make a living @ NLHE, b/c so many ppl play it w/out adaquate knowledge of the game. They give off tells from page 1 of "Read 'Em and Weep," have no idea what to do, when the tough decisions pop up, and often have very predictable hand ranges. That's great. I'll keep playing, until something changes. However, cummon kids! In the recent, "nets vs. vets" episode of Poker After Dark, I couldn't believe that 3 of the best young guns in poker, founding members of "Card Runners" only play NLHE and PLO. They aren't even HORSE players. I see loose-aggressive NLHE players like John Phan and Kenny Tran suceeding @ high levels in Stud tournaments, mixed games, etc... What's wrong w/ us? If you haven't, learn all the games. You might find edge, somewhere you didn't think you could.
I find mixed games to be the most exploitable online because:
1. It becomes apparent, after a few rotations, who prefers which games.
2. They then, w/out fail, OVERPLAY during those rounds.
3. They also have obvious "chinks" in their armor, IE: chasing a jack low in Razz, when my board is xx875.
Between the collusion scandals and popularity of the game, I'd just as soon look my opponents in the eye, if we're playing NLHE or PLO. Thought I started out online, I mostly use it as practice these days. I might enter a big tournament here or there, but I'm mostly a live, cash game player.
I have read most "definitive" poker books, including books on PLO and mixed games, like Sammy Farha's awesome book, "Farha on Omaha." There IS no substitute for experience, but I'm sure glad I read that one, Harrington on Cash Games, Super System... I've found my own style for NLHE (and all the games, for that matter), and I hope that I can get really good @ this in the next few years.
There's only so much $$ to be made in $200 cap buy-in games, and that's the best we get in Cali. Frankly, those stakes suit me fine, and I'm making a living playing them. Since I started taking "business trips," playing TRUE $1/2 or $2/5 NLHE, where you can BUY-IN truly deep-stacked, I recognize the Northern California poker scene for the anomoly that it is. I love living in the Bay Area, but maybe Vegas or Reno some year soon. @ the moment, I'm just grateful to be grindin' rent. | |
